Dress Hire Melbourne: Try-On Locations and Checklist

Compare Melbourne walk-in and appointment-only dress fittings, separate postal hire from postal try-ons, and check fit, event-date availability and returns.

A fitting wastes your trip if the dress is unavailable for your event. For dress hire in Melbourne with a try-on, Dress Hire AU in Greensborough and Your Secret Closet in Hampton publish walk-in options; Ivanhoe Designer Hire and TianasDrobe publish appointment-based fittings. Check the exact garment and size for both the fitting day and the event date before travelling.

A try-on appointment does not reserve a dress for your event. This guide compares the published access arrangements, then gives you a checklist to take to the fitting. Postal delivery is listed separately because a dress sent for a paid hire is not automatically an at-home trial.

Where can you try on hire dresses in Melbourne?

These are examples with official service information checked on 16 October 2026, rather than a ranking or a complete directory. Follow each source link for current arrangements. In the last column, “not confirmed” means the pages reviewed did not establish a separate postal fitting service; it does not mean the business cannot offer one.

Looking specifically for a Melbourne CBD store? The confirmed locations above include Greensborough, Hampton and Donvale. Those are suburban options, not CBD storefronts. Confirm the actual fitting address before planning a city-centre stop; an online page targeting “Melbourne” is not proof of a shop in the CBD.

Opening hours and appointment availability can change. We have left a weekly timetable out: check the live store page and confirm your intended day, especially around public holidays. For an appointment service, also ask about the current fee, whether it is credited against hire, cancellation terms and how many people may try on.

Choose the route that lets you check fit in time

Choose a walk-in visit if you can reach the boutique during its current hours and want to compare available pieces. Still check whether your shortlisted dress will physically be there; permission to walk in does not promise every style or size will be on the rail.

Choose an appointment if you need a particular garment or a confirmed fitting slot. Ivanhoe’s fitting page specifically warns that garments may be hired before the appointment and may also be unavailable for the event date. Ask the shop to check both dates separately.

Choose postal hire only after clarifying the fit risk. Before payment, ask whether there is a distinct try-on service, what it costs, when you must send it back and whether that payment reserves the eventual hire. Without that confirmation, treat the delivery as the rental itself. Do not assume you can wear it, change your mind and return it for a refund.

If the event is close, ask what happens if the garment arrives late or does not fit, and whether a replacement can realistically reach you. Keep an outfit you already own as a fallback until the hire is confirmed. For the outer layer and footwear around the event, use the Melbourne street style guide, or check what to wear to the theatre in Melbourne if your booking is for an evening performance, opera, ballet or opening night.

What should you bring to the fitting?

Bring the pieces that change how the dress sits, plus the information needed to check availability. The following is our editorial preparation checklist, rather than a shop’s compulsory packing list.

  • Event details: date, dress code, venue setting and the time you need to be dressed. Include any travel that changes when you can collect or return it.
  • A shortlist: exact dress names or saved product links, preferred sizes and an alternative style. Ask for the designer’s size guide rather than relying only on your usual size.
  • Measurements: current bust, waist and hip measurements, taken using the relevant size guide’s instructions. If you do not know them, say so rather than guessing.
  • Event shoes: the actual pair, if possible, so you can check the hem and walk in the whole outfit.
  • Underlayers: the bra, camisole or other undergarments you intend to wear, subject to the shop’s fitting rules.
  • Outer layer and bag: useful for checking whether a neckline, sleeve or strap works with the rest of the outfit.

At the fitting, sit down, walk, raise your arms and check the fastening without forcing it. Look for pulling at the bust or hips, straps that slip and a hem that catches under the shoes. Ask before using clips, pins or fashion tape. If the fit needs an alteration, get the owner’s permission before arranging any work; a hired garment is not yours to modify.

Confirm the booking and return plan before paying

Use the table as a note to complete with the shop. Leave unanswered fields blank until you receive a clear answer.

Check Question to resolve Record in your booking note
Exact garment Is this style, colour and size available for my event, as well as my fitting? Garment name, size and confirmed dates
Reservation What action secures it, and when will I receive confirmation? Payment or booking requirement and confirmation
Fitting terms Is there a fee, credit against hire or appointment cancellation charge? Current fitting terms
Total cost What are the hire, bond, delivery, cleaning and any optional backup charges? Itemised total and bond conditions
Handover When and where can I collect it, or when is delivery expected? Address, collection arrangement or tracking
Poor fit What must I do immediately if it does not fit, and what remedy is offered? Notification and return deadline; exchange or credit conditions
Return Must I lodge it by a deadline or have it arrive by that deadline? What about closed days? Date, time, method and proof to keep
Care and damage Who cleans it, and what should I do if it is marked or damaged? Care instructions and reporting contact

Do not leave the poor-fit question until event day. For example, Dress Hire AU’s FAQ, checked on 16 October, describes a return request and posting an unsuitable hire back within 24 hours of delivery for a credit note, with condition requirements. Ivanhoe’s terms, checked the same day, describe returning a sizing or styling problem on the day received for store credit; another size depends on availability. These published processes differ, so ask for the policy attached to your booking rather than assuming a shared return window.

When the dress arrives, check it before the event

Open the parcel promptly, retain the packaging and check the garment against the booking. Follow any instructions about tags before trying it on. Photograph existing marks or damage and report them to the shop, then repeat the fit check with your event shoes and underlayers. Contact the shop immediately if there is a problem; use its process and deadline rather than waiting until after the occasion.

Put the return deadline in your calendar before wearing the dress. Confirm whether the supplied packaging is suitable for the agreed return method and retain tracking or a lodgement receipt where applicable. Follow the owner’s cleaning instructions. For instance, TianasDrobe’s homepage says it handles cleaning; do not assume a different shop follows the same arrangement.

If the hire falls through, plan the fallback around something you already own. The streetwear outfit matrix can help with a casual city outing; use the event’s own dress code for formal occasions.

How we checked these options

We read the official store, fitting, delivery and terms pages linked above on 16 October 2026. Their published statements support the service comparison; we have not visited the studios, tried the dresses or tested delivery. The preparation and movement checks are editorial suggestions. Stock, current fees, individual eligibility and a separate postal try-on arrangement remain matters to confirm for your booking. This guide covers eventwear hire, rather than bridal gown appointments, and does not endorse or rank the services.
