A cabin bag that fails the airline scale is checked, and the coat for a cold Melbourne morning goes into the hold. The kilogram line is the lowest carry-on allowance printed for the flights on the ticket. On the Qantas page read on 20 October 2026, international economy is 7 kg (15 lb).
That 7 kg line is one overhead bag and one personal item. It is also the Dash 8 line on the same page, and the Jetstar economy line Qantas prints for flights booked with Qantas before 2 February 2027 (7 kg across two items). A domestic Qantas allowance on that page is 14 kg with 10 kg per item. Virgin Australia economy, read the same day, is a different rule: one standard bag at 8 kg, plus a personal item. The Melbourne street style guide is the weather and layer list this packing uses. The men’s street-casual checklist is the record of clothes you already own.
| Ticket, as printed 20 October 2026 | Weight line | Dominant failure mode | Prevention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qantas international economy | 7 kg (15 lb) maximum, one overhead bag and one personal item | The coat stays in the overhead bag and the two pieces together exceed 7.00 kg | Weigh both pieces on one scale. If the sum exceeds 7.00 kg, check a bag |
| Qantas domestic economy and business | 14 kg (30 lb), maximum 10 kg (22 lb) per item | A later Dash 8, international, or partner sector still uses a lower line | Qantas says to pack to the lowest allowance on a mixed ticket |
| Qantas Link Dash 8 Q400 | 7 kg (15 lb) maximum, one overhead bag and one personal item | A full-size wheelie bag is collected at boarding because it does not fit that overhead | Use the 7 kg line and the size box before the connection |
| Jetstar economy booked with Qantas, before 2 February 2027 | 7 kg across two items | The two items are packed to the Qantas domestic 14 kg line | Use the 7 kg Jetstar line printed on the Qantas page |
| Virgin Australia economy | Standard bag 8 kg total, no single item over 8 kg, plus a personal item | The personal item is added into the 8 kg as if it were the Qantas 7 kg bundle | Keep the personal item out of the 8 kg sum, and inside its own size |
The 7 kg line, and the lines next to it
Qantas international economy, on the page read on 20 October 2026, is one overhead bag and one personal item at 7 kg (15 lb) maximum. International first, business and premium economy on that page are 14 kg (30 lb) with a maximum of 10 kg (22 lb) per item. Domestic economy and business are also 14 kg with 10 kg per item, and that domestic row lists an overhead bag, an under-seat bag and a personal item. A Qantas Link Dash 8 Q400 is back to 7 kg, and the page notes that small wheelie bags do not fit that overhead and are collected at boarding.
The same page says that a booking with both a domestic and an international flight, or with Qantas, Jetstar or a partner, should be packed to the lowest allowance, especially on a Dash 8. For a Jetstar Airways flight booked with Qantas, the page’s table for flights before 2 February 2027 gives economy 7 kg across two items. The main item in that row is 56 cm wide, 36 cm high and 23 cm deep. From 2 February 2027 the same table changes the piece rules and lists 10 kg maximum per item. This page uses the pre-February line, because that is the row in force on the date of reading.
Virgin Australia economy, read the same day, is one overhead option up to 8 kg total, plus one personal item. No individual item can exceed 8 kg. The standard bag is L56 cm × W36 cm × H23 cm. The personal item is L45 cm × W33 cm × H20 cm and has to fit under the seat. Qantas describes its overhead bag as 56 cm high, 36 cm wide and 23 cm deep. The centimetres are close. The weight rules are not the same bundle, so the sums below stay on the airline that printed them.
Threshold: if any flight on the ticket is Qantas international economy, a Dash 8, or Jetstar economy booked with Qantas before 2 February 2027, pack to 7.00 kg. If the packed weight exceeds 7 kg on that ticket, check a bag.
Worked example on a kitchen scale
These kilograms are scale readings chosen so the subtraction is visible. They are not weights from a clothing catalogue. Replace each one with the reading on your scale, including the empty bag.
W = W_bag + W_coat + W_knit + W_trousers + W_tops + W_shoes + W_smalls + W_personal
W = 2.10 + 0.95 + 0.38 + 0.42 + 0.32 + 0.78 + 0.25 + 1.40 = 6.60 kg
The first seven readings are the overhead bag and what is inside it: 5.20 kg. The 1.40 kg is the personal item. Against the Qantas international economy line:
H = 7.00 - 6.60 = 0.40 kg
A second pair of trousers at the same 0.42 kg reading as the pair already in the bag is heavier than that headroom: 0.42 > 0.40. It does not fit this example without removing something else of at least the same reading. The knit, 0.38 kg, does fit inside the headroom only if something else leaves. In this set it is already inside the 6.60 kg, so it is the evening layer, worn over the day top, and there is no second outfit.
On the Virgin Australia economy rule the personal item stays out of the 8 kg standard-bag sum:
H_bag = 8.00 - 5.20 = 2.80 kg
That 2.80 kg is headroom in the overhead bag only. It is not permission to treat the Virgin personal item as part of a 7 kg Qantas bundle, and it is not the line to use when the ticket also has a 7 kg sector.
Qantas domestic at 14 kg would show 14.00 - 6.60 = 7.40 kg of headroom, and the heaviest single reading here, the 2.10 kg bag, is under the 10 kg per-item cap. The page still sends a mixed ticket back to the lowest allowance. A Melbourne trip that starts on a domestic flight and continues on international economy is a 7.00 kg pack.
One coat for a 9.6°C October gap
Melbourne (Olympic Park), station 086338, on the Bureau of Meteorology table read on 20 October 2026, has an October mean maximum of 20.5°C and a mean minimum of 10.9°C. The statistics run from 2013, and the page was created on 15 October 2026.
gap = 20.5 - 10.9 = 9.6°C
That is the average gap, not a forecast for a given day. The Melbourne guide already turns the station’s seasonal gaps into a visitor list: one removable layer, a dark base, one accent, and walkable shoes. For this cabin bag the removable layer is the 0.95 kg coat in the example. The knit is the piece that changes the day top for an evening indoors. A second coat would be another line on the scale, and this example has 0.40 kg of headroom on the 7 kg ticket.
The overhead size still applies when the scale is under the limit. Qantas lists the overhead bag at 56 cm × 36 cm × 23 cm. If the coat stops the bag from closing inside that box, the bag fails the size line while W can still read 6.60 kg. The Dash 8 note is the sharp version of the same failure: a wheelie bag that does not fit is collected at boarding.
Shoes, a dark base, and the searches by age
One pair of shoes is in the example at 0.78 kg, inside the overhead bag. A second pair needs a reading at or under the headroom that remains after the first pair, the coat and the bags. On the 7 kg example that remainder is 0.40 kg. Walkable shoes are already the visitor point in the Melbourne guide. The temperature bands for what to wear once you land are in the streetwear outfit guide.
The dark base is the same pattern that guide records for the city: black or charcoal pieces that combine when a layer comes off. One bottom, in the example at 0.42 kg, is the pair you walk in and the pair you keep for the evening. A pale second pair would be a second 0.42 kg reading, which is already over the 0.40 kg headroom.
A capsule wardrobe for women over 50, and a capsule wardrobe for women over 60, meet the same two published pages. Qantas and Virgin Australia do not print a separate cabin weight for those ages. Olympic Park does not print a separate October gap. The list stays the ticket’s kilogram line, one coat, one knit, one bottom, one pair of shoes, and the personal item in its own size.
The line to copy before you close the bag
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|

How this page was checked
The Qantas carry-on page, saved on 20 October 2026, supplies the 7 kg international economy and Dash 8 lines, the 14 kg domestic line with 10 kg per item, the lowest-allowance sentence, the overhead size, and the Jetstar table for flights booked with Qantas. The Virgin Australia carry-on page, saved the same day, supplies the 8 kg economy standard bag, the 8 kg per-item cap, and the personal-item size. The Bureau of Meteorology Olympic Park table supplies the October means 20.5°C and 10.9°C. The 6.60 kg, 5.20 kg, 0.40 kg, 2.80 kg and 9.6°C figures are arithmetic on those readings and those means. No suitcase was weighed for this page.
