A refused bag of worn clothes wastes a trip. For textile recycling in Melbourne, sort by condition first, then confirm the specific programme, item category and eligibility before leaving home or paying.
Do not put clothing or household textiles in your household recycling bin. Planet Ark’s guidance, checked on 15 October 2026, directs these items to dedicated reuse or recycling channels. A charity donation bin and a specialist textile collection are different destinations.
The local status matters: Whitehorse’s council page currently flags its UPPAREL programme and HomeCycle as under review. Melton’s published guidance distinguishes reusable clothing, poor-condition textiles and contaminated items. Neither is a promise that any Melbourne household can leave any bag for free.
Sort what is actually in the bag
Start with three separate piles. This is a packing aid; the receiving organisation still decides what it accepts.
- Wearable and worth passing on. Inspect the whole garment, including seams and fastenings. Planet Ark suggests considering whether you would give it to someone you know, and checking with the recipient before donating. If you want to exchange it, use the Melbourne clothes-swap preparation guide for the event’s own rules.
- Clean but worn out. Note holes, fraying and worn patches. Damage does not tell you which collector accepts the item; its category and the programme’s terms still matter. If you would keep it after a repair, start with the clothing-repair consultation checklist.
- Dirty, mouldy, contaminated or outside the category list. Keep these apart while asking the operator about disposal. Do not hide an uncertain item under clean clothes to complete a box.

An intact shirt and trousers sit separately from a holed T-shirt and frayed towel.
For a mixed bag, write an item list rather than just “old clothes”: for example, shirts, towels and a pillow. That makes the acceptance question specific enough for an operator to answer. The pillow does not inherit the towel’s eligibility.
Match condition, channel and eligibility
Read across the whole row. The status column describes the source check, not a reserved collection or permission to unload.
| Item condition | Channel to investigate | Area or eligibility check | Published status and next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wearable clothing | Donation, exchange or resale | Ask the recipient about condition, categories and capacity | Planet Ark’s reuse guidance checked 15 October. Confirm acceptance before taking it in. |
| Clean, damaged clothing or household linen | A specialist household textile service such as UPPAREL | Check the exact category, address and selected booking option | Household ordering and terms published on 15 October; paid service, with exclusions. |
| Clothing still in good condition in Melton | Resale Shop at Melton Recycling Facility | Confirm the particular load and any entry requirements | Council A–Z guidance read 11 October directs good-condition items to resale. Direct recheck on 15 October was blocked. |
| Poor-condition textiles in Melton | Melton Recycling Facility’s textile stream | Ask about the material, contamination and eligibility | The same A–Z guidance directs poor-condition textiles to the facility. Confirm before travelling. |
| Contaminated textiles in Melton | Ask council which waste route applies | Confirm entitlements, proof and possible charges | A–Z guidance says waste entitlements or costs apply; a free textile drop-off is not established for this load. |
| A bag intended for Whitehorse’s council UPPAREL trial or HomeCycle | Recheck the council programme page | A former resident programme listing does not establish current access | Both programmes flagged as under review on 15 October. Do not assume collections have resumed. |
For another municipality, use your own council’s current waste guidance. A nearby council’s offer is a lead to investigate, rather than evidence of your eligibility.
Check the programme behind the listing
Whitehorse: check for a resumption notice
The Whitehorse reusable-items page asks readers to return for updates on the UPPAREL programme. It separately says HomeCycle is being reviewed and points to its newsletter for resumption updates. It also suggests Recycle Mate for alternative destinations. The review notice concerns those council programmes; it does not establish the status of every independent service.
Melton: ask about contamination before unloading
The council’s clothing A–Z entry gives different instructions according to condition. If your bag has contamination, describe it before setting off. The short entry does not establish the proof required, the charge for your particular load or eligibility for someone living elsewhere. Those details remain to be confirmed with council. Do not use a general recycling listing to fill in those blanks.

A small hole and loose threads are visible in the grey fabric beside the towel.
Paid household collection: read the exclusions first
UPPAREL’s household page, checked 15 October, accepts clean damaged clothing, socks, linen and fabric scraps. Its exclusions include mouldy or unwashed items, used underwear, pillows, doonas, electric blankets and blockout-backed curtains. These are examples; read the complete current list for every item.
Its process involves purchasing recycling, supplying packaging and arranging courier collection or a post-office drop-off through the confirmation link. Public drop-off at its own facility is unavailable according to the FAQ. Confirm the checkout total, package rules and address before buying. A paid booking does not make an excluded item acceptable.
Before travelling or paying, complete this check
Use this as a note on your phone. Leave a field unanswered until you have checked it; an unanswered eligibility question is a reason to pause that trip.
| Record | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Contents | Each garment or household item category, including anything padded, coated or mixed into the bag |
| Condition | Wearable, clean with damage, or the specific contamination you need to ask about |
| Destination | Exact programme and location; save its current official page |
| Current service | Whether the programme is operating, and whether a booking or event date applies |
| Eligibility | Whether your address qualifies, and any proof required for your load |
| Cost | Confirmed charge or explicit free acceptance for these items; any entitlement being used |
| Handover | Opening or booked time, packaging, labels and where the items must be handed over |
| Unaccepted items | What you will take home and which council disposal question remains open |

The box remains open, with folded garments beside it.
For searches such as free textile recycling Melbourne, establish what “free” covers: the specific item, quantity, location and eligible household. If the current page does not answer that, ask the operator. A past trial, a partner promotion or an old map pin does not settle the question.
For textile recycling bins in Melbourne, check the named operator and accepted categories at that exact location. Keep the bag with you if the site is closed or cannot accept it. If no suitable specialist route is available, ask your council about the appropriate waste option; the household recycling bin remains unsuitable.
Method, sources and limits
This guide combines public service terms with an editorial sorting table and departure checklist. Whitehorse, UPPAREL and Planet Ark pages were fetched and read on 15 October 2026. Melton’s condition guidance comes from its official A–Z page archived and read on 11 October; its text was also available through the research reader on 15 October, but direct access returned an access-denied response. Current Melton eligibility, charges and opening arrangements therefore need a fresh council check.
The research used an Australian English desktop search snapshot from 11 October and active official-source searches on 15 October. This is a selection of relevant channels, not an exhaustive directory. No collection was booked or tested for this article, and the images do not show a named operator’s premises. The page makes no estimate of recycling yield or emissions savings.
For clothes still suitable to sell, the separate Melbourne selling guide explains payment options. Browse all wardrobe guides for the other decisions in a clear-out. Updated 15 October 2026.
