For ripstop nylon vs polyester in outerwear, compare the named fabric, its finish and the repair instructions. Bring CORDURA into that comparison by its specific fabric family.
CORDURA TrueLock is offered as a plain or rip-stop fabric.
Start with the question that matters to your jacket:
- For rubbing and scuffs, look for abrasion information for the actual cloth.
- For sun exposure, check the fabric and dye process behind the fade claim.
- For a small tear, identify the surface before choosing a patch.
Use the comparisons below to read a specification and plan a repair, then return to our street style and wardrobe guides for more outerwear reading.
Compare the named fabrics and finishes
Keep the product name beside each specification when you make a shortlist.
Nylon outerwear and CORDURA
Ottertex Nylon Ripstop (DWR Coating) can be used to sew jackets, windbreakers, and tracksuits. CORDURA Classic uses high-tenacity, air-jet textured nylon 6,6 filament yarns. CORDURA Classic lists yarn weights ranging from 330D to 1,000D. Brookwood offers CORDURA Classic in 500 Denier with piece dyed and solution dyed options.
When comparing ripstop nylon vs CORDURA, write down the exact family and finish. For a closer look at reading a fabric label, see our ripstop weight and weave guide.
Polyester: breathable DWR and PU-coated versions
Use these Ripstop by the Roll products as separate specification examples.
| Product | Published specification |
|---|---|
| Breathable DWR ripstop polyester |
The denier is 68D. The finish is breathable with DWR. The finished weight is 1.9 oz/yd2. |
| PU Coated Ripstop Polyester |
The denier is 70D. The finish is PU Backside, DWR Front. The listed finished weight is ~2.7 osy. |
Record the finish and finished weight together. For rainwear questions, continue with our guide to ripstop coatings and waterproof ratings.
Ripstop nylon strength: separate tearing from abrasion
Ask for the test method alongside any strength result.
The ASTM falling-pendulum tear method measures the force required to propagate a single-rip tear starting from a cut in a fabric. The ASTM Martindale method measures the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics using the Martindale abrasion tester.
CORDURA describes Classic as having excellent resistance to abrasion. CORDURA also describes Classic as having excellent tear strength.
Abrasion resistance is affected by test conditions including the abradant, specimen tension and contact pressure. Laboratory abrasion resistance is generally only one of several factors contributing to actual wear performance or durability.
For your jacket comparison, keep tear results and abrasion results in separate columns. Ask for the test conditions, then inspect the cuffs, elbow folds and the area under your bag strap.
UV fade: look at the fabric and dye process
Include the named fabric and its colour process in your shortlist.
Ripstop by the Roll describes increased UV resistance compared to nylon for its PU Coated Ripstop Polyester. For that same PU-coated polyester, the supplier describes less water absorption compared to nylon.
For CORDURA TrueLock, color is introduced at the molten polymer level before the fiber is formed. CORDURA claims TrueLock is 12x more UV fade-resistant than piece-dyed fabric. CORDURA bases that claim on internal/third-party testing per AATCC TM190 and AATCC TM16.3.
When sun exposure is your priority, ask for colour-fade information for the exact fabric and colour you are considering. Keep that information beside the dye-process description rather than choosing from the fibre name alone.
Ripstop nylon repair tape: choose by the surface
Read the jacket’s finish information and the tape’s compatibility list before opening a repair kit.
Standard Tenacious Tape Repair Tape
GEAR AID Tenacious Tape Repair Tape lists nylon and polyester among its compatible fabrics. No sewing skills or heat are required for this tape.
For this standard tape, follow the application sequence:
- Clean the repair area with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt or body oils.
- Trim loose threads.
- Cut a patch with rounded corners.
- Overlap the repair area by at least 0.5’’ in all directions.
- Smooth out bubbles and ensure the edges lay flat.
The adhesive reaches full strength after 24 hours. Wait 24 hours after application before washing.
Tenacious Tape Silnylon Repair Tape
GEAR AID Tenacious Tape Silnylon Repair Tape uses silicone-based adhesive. Its listed compatible surfaces are silicone-treated fabrics, silnylon, and silpoly.
For this Silnylon product, use its own preparation and application instructions:
- Let the cleaned area dry completely.
- Extend the patch about 0.5“ in all directions.
- Apply firm pressure from the center outward to remove air bubbles.
The Silnylon patch is listed as not removable.
Position it carefully before pressing it down. Keep the product instructions with your repair kit so you can refer to the correct procedure next time.
Put the comparison to work
Before choosing an outerwear piece or repairing one you own, make a short note of:
- The fabric’s full name and family.
- The finish on the face and reverse.
- The abrasion or tear question you want answered.
- The colour-fade information for your chosen fabric.
- The repair tape’s compatible surfaces and application instructions.
